Charles H. Alston: The INVOLVED Artist

Charles H. Alston had been involved in the artistic world from an early age. After completing high school, he graduated from Columbia University and received his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Columbia’s Teachers College.
Starting his career as a commercial artist, working for the top magazines, Alston was not able to take advantage of his personal artistic style. Leaving this undesirable field, Alston was able to find his place in the arts, as a top-notch painter and first African-American teacher at the Art Students League and the first African-American as “painter member” of the New York City Art Commission.
